Born in Dundee,1940, Joe studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, between 1960-1964, and was thereafter awarded a Post Graduate Scholarship, and a Royal Scottish Academy Bursary in 1964-65.
Inspired by the evocative genre paintings of American Realist Edward Hopper, Joe creates his own atmospheric observations of everday life, which through the contrast of light and shade, achieve intense richness and warmth that has made him one of Scotland's most recognisable and collectable artists.
He has received several prestigious awards, and his work is included in a number of public and municipal collections.
