Andrew P Neilson

(1920 – 2004)

Born in 1920 in Dundee, Andrew Neilson trained at Dundee College of Art and was best known for his characteristic sketch-like works depicting the streets and landmarks in his hometown.

Neilson’s paintings proved popular and were enthusiastically collected by fellow Dundonians who empathised with his atmospheric records of the past and present architecture of the city. Working most effectively in watercolours and gouache, Neilson created a remarkable catalogue of work portraying the changing face of post war Dundee over several decades.

He exhibited locally primarily, however also on two occasions at the Royal Scottish Academy, and his watercolour of The Overgate is part of the permanent collection of Dundee Municipal Art Gallery.
