Catriona Millar
Layering paint with a palette knife onto canvas, Catriona Millar creates surfaces which irresistibly draw viewers into her work; you could almost reach out and touch her subjects, making these stylised renderings feel much more like human people.
People are almost exclusively the subject of her paintings, her fascination with ‘the connective tissue that defines us, from the stories we tell, to the worlds we imagine.’
Colour, texture, and scale are all bold within her paintings, but the most intimate part of the story is found in the faces of her subjects. Creating portraits of people in all their guises, viewers of Catriona’s work are bound to recognise themselves within the canvases.
Since the success of her sell-out 2005 degree show at Gray’s School of Art, Catriona has exhibited across the UK, including at the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh. Her instantly recognisable paintings are now acclaimed and collected around the world.
