Samuel Howley
Samuel trained as a classical musician and also completed a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at University of Trinity St David in Wales. Now based in the village of Meigle, he finds inspiration in the surrounding countryside of the Angus Glens and the Cairngorms – never leaving home without his sketchbook. The changing light, colours and weather that comes with the passing seasons in Scotland continue to influence his work.
Preferring to work with oils, Samuel finds it the most effective medium for creating texture in his work. He paints mostly with a pallet knife to move the layers of paint around, taking advantage of slower drying times. Samuel says of his work: ‘Everything I create is an emotional response to the subject. The act of painting ‘excites’ me. I believe that art should help us escape to a place of beauty. The marks I create fill me with joy and I hope that my work does the same for you.’
