Stuart Buchanan

Stuart Buchanan is a leading name within the contemporary Scottish art scene, hailing from Glasgow where he studied Fine Art Drawing and Painting at the Glasgow School of Art. Generally working in the traditional medium of oils, Stuart’s paintings are instantly recognisable and are often representational, with figures set in richly textured, colourful ambiguous landscapes. He draws inspiration from his own childhood memories and experiences, as well as more current day to day life and the environment and landscapes that surround him.

Since relocating in 2006, Stuart has produced en plein air landscape and figurative paintings from his studio at the Watchie, in Catterline on the Kincardineshire coast of Aberdeenshire. Creating a series of paintings of the view from outside his studio, he observes “ordinary” things like the scene from his doorstep and captures the intimacy and beauty within. It is no surprise that Buchanan is not the only artist to be inspired by the views from his studio The Watchie- this small fisherman’s cottage was previously home to Joan Eardley, with both artists discovering a great creative energy in this remote corner of Scotland.

In 1991 Stuart won the Patrick Allan Fraser Scholarship, and in 1998 was the ‘Artist in Residence’ at Hospitalfield House, Arbroath. Stuart has had many solo exhibitions, North and South of the border and his work can be found in collections worldwide.
